Hi There!

Rather than do a bio post, or a “welcome to this random blog” post, I thought I’d start out by doing a little writer’s interview, since that’s mainly what this blog is about.

What are you working on right now?
A litrpg novel Deus.exe Machina: Well of Souls.

Plotter or Pantster?
I plot a little, then I write until I run out of ideas, then I plot some more, and so on until “The End”.

What are your influences?
Tolkien had a profound affect on me as a child. I also read a lot of really brutal horror stuff at an inappropriate age, which has colored a lot of my writing as well– I’m not averse to tragedy and loss in my stories.

Specifically in the litrpg field, I’m a big Dungeon Crawler Carl fan.

What genres do you like to read?
I mostly read Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but I also Horror, Mystery, Thrillers, the occasional memoir and straight up literature. I’m all over the place

And write?
Mostly Fantasy, often historical fantasy and a bit of sci-fi. When I write short form it tends toward the dark, but not quite horror side.

How many books do you typically read in a year?
It varies a lot depending on what else I have going on. I’ve read over 50 books in a single year on occasion, but I’ve also had years where I barely manage one.

Who are your favorite current authors?
Naomi Novik, Matt Diniman, Tim Powers, Martha Wells

Favorite dead Authors
Octavia Butler, Tolkien, Bradbury

I will add that there are other authors I read frequently, but while I may be hooked on their stories, they’re not counted among my favorites. Sometimes, it’s just that the particular genre isn’t my thing. I read a few mystery series that I really enjoy, but I’d be much more into it if they were set in a fantasy or sci-fi world. Sometimes I find myself hooked by series that isn’t as well written as I would like, but the story/premise is unique and interesting enough that I put up with the less than perfect prose to see how things turn out– but I can’t bring myself to add that author to my list of favorites. Guilty Pleasures showed stay in the closet.
